About the Author and Illustrator:

Eldon Irving served in the ministry for forty-three years, the last twenty-eight years as senior pastor of First Christian Church in Duncanville, Texas, a suburb of Dallas.

Born in McAllen, Texas, Dr. Irving graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude from the University of Washington. He received additional degrees from Yale University, United Theological Seminary, Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University, and did graduate study at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

Dr. Irving has been active in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at the area, regional and general levels. He served on the Committee of Recommendations to the International Convention of Christian Churches, has been a member of the General Board of the Christian Church, served on the Worship Commission for the General Church, served on the Ohio Youth Commission, and was moderator of the North Texas Area of the Christian Church in the Southwest.

In addition to Personalities in the Pews, Dr. Irving’s published works include a book: The Life of Christ in Masterpieces of Art, articles in Yale Divinity School’s magazine, denominational magazines, Reader’s Digest, and newspapers in Ohio, Colorado and Texas. Dr. Irving is a member and on the board of the Dallas Area Writers Group.

After having served churches in Warren and Dayton, Ohio, and Kansas City, Kansas, Dr. Irving began his ministry in Duncanville, Texas in 1976. In the course of his twenty-eight years ministry in Duncanville, the church was recognized by the National Evangelical Association for “excellence in evangelism and church growth.” The church building doubled in size, the budget was increased by more than 700 percent, many new programs and ministries were added, and the church was recognized by the General Assembly as one of five Christian Churches in the United States for being an “exemplary teaching congregation.”

Recently, Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University awarded Dr. Irving the Distinguished Minister's Award. This award is given to only one person a year.
For recreation, Dr. Irving enjoys sailboat racing, and he and his wife, Gloria, have raced in several national regattas. Eldon also is interested in antique cars, and for several years made his pastoral calls in a 1929 Modal A roadster.

Gloria Irving studied art at the Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas State University, and received her degree in Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Arlington. She has worked as an artist for Hallmark Cards, was a designer for Kevore Wall Coverings in California, an artist at Gill Studio near Kansas City, and worked as an animation artist for K. & H.
